Tuned In: A Core Team Coaching Competency That Can’t Be Ignored

Teams are always sending signals. And as those signals come in, in different ways, and at different times we’re often flooded with information.

These signals are sometimes loud and obvious – filled with emotion and concern. And at other times they are quiet and almost invisible.

As team coaches, we must practice the skill of tuning in to all these signals and helping make sure that they are received, understood, and used by the teams with whom we work.

Because team conversations have different tones and energy – we must always tune our own listening to the particular team that is in front of us.

Teams will at times resist the urge to share all of their information and/or over-rely on the “content” conversation that is so well rehearsed and useful in the day to day. We also need to help our teams learn to tune in to the voices and signals that are not so easy to see and hear.
