MIT Leadership Capability Model provides a useful tool to assess leadership strengths in a team that can be both a resource as well as offer diversity to leverage from.

The model is based on the assumption that there is no perfect leader in this world. All leaders are imperfect in different ways. But it is possible to have a perfect leadership team or create one.
As individual team members, think about where your strengths and weaknesses might lie as a leader and rate the four leadership capabilities listed below on a 5-point scale (1 being lowest and 5 being highest). Be as honest as you can as faking will help no one.

    1. Visioning – Your ability to create a narrative about where we are and where we want to be and why. It is about the true north.
    2. Sense making – Your ability to map the environment around you that is constantly changing. It is about understanding the lay of the land, the present state of the organization and its environment.
    3. Relating – Your ability to create ties with other people. It is about building social capital and political capital.
    4. Inventing – Your ability to do something that hasn’t been done before. It is all about execution or implementation of new initiatives that can create economic value.

Share the leadership strengths available in the team ( rated as 4 or 5) that can make the team aware of the “Resources” available within the team and their “Diversity”. The diversity of strengths in the team can be complimentary. Also, share the leadership weaknesses in the team (rated as 1 or 2) and explore if the weaknesses can be compensated by the strengths available in the team or if the team needs to obtain these resources from outside, as and when required.

The exercise needs to be properly facilitated wherein members share their leadership strengths and weaknesses openly and in a fun way and also explore how they can be exploited fully for the team’s benefit while taking on new actions to enhance the team performance indicators as well as the business metrics.
