I like to encourage movement and visuals into my coaching and so alongside a verbal discussion (or sometimes to kick off a verbal discussion) I will put up 6 pieces of flip chart paper around the room and at the top of each sheet write the following:

    1. What encourages me …
    2. What surprises me …
    3. What concerns me …
    4. I learned that …
    5. Questions I have are …
    6. Possible actions to take are …

I then give each participant a pack of post-its and a black Sharpie. I ask them to write their responses to each question and post them on the appropriate flip chart. When everyone is completed, I have people visit each flip chart and facilitate a conversation about the responses posted.

We are actively moving around my visiting each chart and we have something visual to respond to and talk about. It helps with the ORSC idea of “put the idea out front.” They are looking at written responses together and talking about the range of responses. It also helps the more reflective people take time to formulate their thoughts and so is a good balance of reflecting/writing and talking.
