This is an exercise I have used many times and it always delivers. If you have a big team (more than 10) you will probably need to break into two groups for this exercise.
Allow 5 minutes per person and 5 to 10 minutes for intro and set up.
Intro – Based on the assumption that who we are today is a function of our life experiences so far, be they ‘good’ or ‘bad’ experiences – they have made us. This exercise is called ‘Lifeline’ and it’s a chance to look back over our lives to identify the ‘milestones’ that have most influenced us – in our whole lives not just work.
Set Up – give them time to reflect on up to 10 of these milestones and ask them to put one milestone per post it note. Once they have done that, ask them to narrow the 10 down to 3 that they are willing to share publicly (they can change their mind as to which ones to share as the exercise unfolds)
Lifeline on wall: Put a piece of tape to represent the timeline with 70’s 80’s etc to denote decades.
Exercise: Ask them in turn to come up and talk through the milestones they have selected – it’s useful to prompt them to not only say WHAT the event was but also WHY it is a milestone, how has it impacted them? They then place their post it note on the timeline.Others listen – keep questions to a minimum – keep it flowing.
Option: Some people like to have members go chronologically – following the dates so you progress through the decades together.
Debrief: Simple as asking them – what is present on/in this team now that wasn’t before?
