As Team Coaches we often find ourselves in front of a team of passionate players, an overloaded agenda, and a deep awareness of how far we have to travel to help them improve.
And then something happens that forces us to throw everything out the window. The old joke applies: “What does a team coach do during a lunch break? rewrite the agenda!”
Learning to manage for these variables and make progress, while holding space for the team to learn, is best described as a dance. The dance we call, “Actively Present”.
Being “Actively Present” is a core competency for team coaches and the fourth of five team coaching competencies we will cover this year. Join us as we explore:
- A thorough look at the variables that need to be considered with a single team coaching session as well as a larger ongoing engagement.
- Leading the dance between the domains of productivity and positivity.
- Learn to listen for the music, the “voice” of the team, and its volume.
- Metaphors that can help you explore what is happening from moment to moment.
- Observations about the “systems” desire to get everyone – including you as the coach – to conform.
- Skills and good advice for recovering the “present” when you find yourself going astray.
- Tips for team coaches: exercises, practices and your contributions to a better understanding of this core competency.
