Being a Team coach means being observant – watching the team and its members interact with their work and each other.
But for truly exceptional team coaching to happen – we must be “reflective observers” which introduces additional a couple of distinctions.
Slowing down and getting reflective is a process that most teams are sorely lacking in the day to day hustle of accomplishing their purpose.
Team coaches can be an oasis of observed habits and patterns for a team to use as they attempt to grow.
And a truly reflective team coach can become a source of role modeling to help a team learn to reflect on their own behavior long after the team coach has left the room.
Reflective observers can mirror back to the team at the moment when the team is missing something that seems obvious to the outside coach.
Sometimes the simple act of repeating back the words of a team can be enough to facilitate a shift in perception.
And in other contexts, a coach might be called on to mirror back agreements not being met or certain voices being ignored.
Without a team coach to provide that dogged reflection through observation – a team might be doomed to repeat the same mistakes again.
