I am not sure where I picked up this idea but I like it! It gets energy in the room, stirs creativity and provides an excellent ramp for exploring and aligning around team vision for success around a key initiative or mission that they are striving to implement.
The set-up is simple. Divide the team in small groups (4 to 5). Invite everyone to project themselves into the future – e.g. 10 years from now (or other timespan you as the Facilitator deem appropriate for the exercise).
Share the following scenario (or adapt it).
Your team (or company) efforts around project/product/or initiative X have been so successful that you are recognized as a worldwide leader in this arena. Because of your breakthrough work in this field, Time Magazine (or CNN or other big media player) wants to do a special feature on your team/company – for worldwide distribution.
Your task is to design a Magazine Cover for this feature edition of Time Magazine to illustrate your tea’s/company’sa “picture of success” 10 years from now. (If you as Facilitator prefer a different media channel, the task could be, for example, to design a “live sketch” for coverage by CNN). Challenge them to come up with an inspiring motto or slogan which captures the essence their success. (Introduce an element of competition and fun between the groups!)
Time allocation: +/- 20 minutes to come up with their picture (or live sketch) of success.
Materials: For the magazine covers: flipchart paper, colored markers, and if you like, other bits and bobs, to creatively illustrate their “picture of success”). For the live sketches: groups use whatever they have in the room, especially their imagination!
Plenary: If the task chosen was to design a magazine cover, have each group do a 1 minute pitch to “sell” their concept of the cover page. Keep the tone light and engaging. If the task chosen was to present a “live sketch”, this could take a little longer to play out (e.g. 3 to 4 minutes). I suggest you take a video of the sketches to hand back to the team after the event as a source of inspiration and fun.
Debrief: No need to specify here, we all know the drill. Open space for team dialogue … noticing similarities and differences in their pictures or sketches. Capturing keywords and ideas and building on these to come up with a common motto or slogan to reflect their team vision or dream.
After a fun and collaborative exercise like this, its usually an easy and natural “flow” for the team to begin to co-create strategy and actions that move them closer to the dream!
