Reconciliation and Rebuilding Trust
Overview:
When teams work at their best, members trust one another to be reliable and mutually supportive. But conflict, rifts or misunderstandings can interrupt this ease-filled trusting atmosphere, and when they do, the important work of reconciliation begins. Reconciliations rebuild trust and renew bonds. At its best, it leaves teams stronger and more capable than before.
In pairs, have partners interview one another and share their responses with one another to the following questions.
1. Think about a time when you went through a process of reconciliation and rebuilding trust. It may have been on this team or elsewhere in your life. Tell the story:
• Who was involved?
• What happened?
• What specifically did you and the others involved do to work through what needed attention and how did this strengthen your relationsip?
• What did you learn from this process – about yourself, the other person and trust?
2. Now describe a time when members of this team have successfully reconciled difficulties or differences, rebuilding trust in the process.
• Who did what?
• How?
• With what effect?
3. Reflecting on these and other experiences that you’ve had in the past what are the core factors that contribute to reconciliation and trust? What are the core capacities that you bring to this team in its ongoing commitment to reconciliation and trust?
At end, do a large group debrief and ask each participant to share a commitment or skill to reconciling or rebuilding trust when necessary.
