EXERCISE ON DECISION MAKING
Goal : To get the team making more efficient decisions faster, better and with a goal to getting the results so that the team can win/succeed together.
Tools to set up the exercise:
1. Around 30 rubber jar opener pads each numbered from 1-30 with a sharpie.
2. Duct tape to outline/tape off a rectangle or square space depending on number of participants (smaller groups will require a square, larger groups/teams will require a rectangle) with 3-4 participants standing along each side on the outside of the square/rectangle.
3. Throw the rubber jar pads randomly into the rectangle space (number side up)TASK :
1. Each team has to work together in order to touch the numbers in consecutive order as efficiently as they can in the shortest time possible.
2. Rule#1 – They cannot move or rearrange the numbered pads – they should remain in the same position in which they fall
3. Rule #2 Every team member has to touch at least 1 or 2 numbered pads (the team should keep track so that everyone on the team participates)
4. . Rule # 3 : At any given moment, there should never be more than 1 person inside the work square/rectangle area at the same time.
5. Rule#4: No one person is allowed to touch 2 consecutive numbers in the square.Outcome:
1. Make the team decide /huddle to plan how they are going to roll this out.
2. Although in the interest of time, we give 5 mins for 1st try, 3 mins for second and 1-2 mins for third attempt, the goal is to get them to doing things efficiently without breaking rules as fast as possible by taking smarter and smarter decisions together
3. After each attempt ask them: Is that the best you can do? What worked, did not work. How could they improve speed/accuracy/no rules breaking?
4. Give them planning time for each attempt, to refine ideas agree on decisions
5. Ask them: Did it matter whose idea it was when the outcome is favourable?
6. Ask: What factors contributed to weighing in on one decision instead of the other
7. Ask: Did everyone contribute to the decision or were some content to following directions?
8. What were the factors that got in the way of decision making?
9. Which team member is being trusted the most for ideas? Is it making others passive?
