Communication is not just important but integral to both face-to-face and virtual teams, but imperative for virtual teams. This White Paper by Ferrell and Herb (2012) addresses key issues regarding communication in virtual team environments, and states that it is essential for virtual teams to leverage three factors to ensure communicative effectiveness and functioning in v-team environments, which in turn helps to ensure effective knowledge sharing: 1) trust in team members and the value of having an initial face-to-face team encounter/retreat, 2) leadership and how it is utilized; and 3) training and comfort with communication technologies utilized as a primary means for communication among team members, (i.e., text-based serves such as email or message boards) based upon the uniqueness of each virtual team.
