This is the scenario that we´ve been facing in Brazil nowadays: two-year recession, the worst crisis ever seen for small and medium size business, 14 million people unemployed, high-level corruption scandal and urban violence increasing every day… So, you can imagine the challenge to coach teams that have been facing such a hard market and tired of result failure.
So, as team coaches, what can we do to deal with a Low Optimism Team facing difficult times?
    · Be cheerful, but not silly – As coaches we must show a positive view of the scene, but we cannot force it on them. They probably have many reasons why they became so negative and down-beat and we must respect it. It is our goal to show them the good outcomes of every tough situation, and for sure, if they look harder they will find it.
    · What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger – Being a reflective observer is crucial to rebound observations and questions back to the team, so they can see clearly who they are, be aware of old habits or any other issues that could be holding them back.  It is very important to lead the team to discuss about the lessons learned from the failures and what they can do differently next time to reach new results.
    · Let it go – Help them to let go of the past. As team coaches, we must be system aware to help them to see the destructive criticism that frequent failures may have built in the team´s confidence.
    · Celebrate small victories – Coaching a team with low confidence requires a high level of commitment. As the team’s champion, we must show a belief in the team’s ability to take on the challenges. Encourage them to celebrate smaller sub-goals and to be proud of every step they take toward reaching their final goal. Every celebration has a positive vibration that helps to build confidence in the team.
    · Stop the blame – We often face their desire to put blame on others, on the reduced resources, the industry, etc., but we must help them to face the reality and deal with it. So, we must emphasize the best actions possible for today. The plan must focus on actions they have control and knowledge to accomplish.
Overall, our competency to commit to the team is the most important of all. We must give them effective tools to focus on the positivity strengths so they can overcome all the challenges and take this opportunity to became a stronger team. It is not easy job, but for sure, it is worth it!
