Here are some questions to help leaders reflect on themselves and how they might support the success of their teams….
Knowledge and Awareness
What am I doing to learn about best practices or the science of teams?
What am I doing to increase my self-awareness and how I show up as leader of this team?Team Design
Who are our stakeholders and what do they need from this team?
What must we do as a team – what is our compelling purpose?
What skills/knowledge and attributes need to be present on this team to achieve our purpose?
What I have done or am I doing to confirm the right people with the right skills/attributes are on the team?
What am I doing to ensure we create the best possible structure and environment for this team to do its work together?
What am I doing to ensure we have needed support and rewards/recognition for the team?Team Members
How am I helping team members:
– Develop self-awareness?
– Build their understanding of one another?
– Articulate their common and unique roles on the team
– Bring their own leadership to the team?
– Reflect on, monitor and manage themselves as team members, with awareness of their contribution levels (to avoid contributing too much or too little), body language, active listening skills, etc.?
How am I holding individuals accountable for how they show up as members of the team?Within the Team
What am I doing to promote a sense of safety among team members? A sense of inclusion?
What actions am I taking to role model the behaviors I’d like to see in the team?
What am I doing to ensure the team has clarity and alignment on our purpose and shared work?
What am I doing to ensure we create a set of working agreements or norms to help support our relationships and productivity as a team?
What am I doing to ensure we hold ourselves accountable for adhering to our norms?
What am I doing to help the team create a sense a team awareness – to observe and monitor ourselves as a team in terms of our interactions, patterns, strengths, blind spots, etc.? -
