“Trust is like the air we breathe – when it’s present, nobody really notices; when it’s absent, everybody notices.” Warren Buffet

As I apply my learnings from the Accelerated Program into the work I do with teams and leaders, a common thread weaves it’s way through each experience. This thread is Trust. Assessment results are shared, conversations come together, and common language is created. Language that is essential in understanding definitions and expectations when addressing Trust.

Ken Blanchard’s ABCD’s of Trust are at the center of the whitepaper “Building Trust: The Critical Link to a High-Involvement, High Energy Work Place Begins with a Common Language”. He proposes Trust is a primary factor in how people work together, listen to one another, and build effective relationships. When reviewing the Team Coaching Model (TCIM) and Positivity Strengths, it does not take long to link and align Ken’s proposal with the focus on the interrelationships between team members and the spirit or tone of the team which create the culture, and ground conditions for the work of the team. Yet many people are unaware of the actions that influence trust and Ken takes the guess work out of this by introducing the four elements of trust being Able, Believable, Connected, and Dependable (ABCD). Able is about demonstrating competence. Believable means acting with integrity, Connected is about demonstrating care and concern for other people, and Dependable is about honouring commitments by following through on what people say they are going to do. Again all align nicely with the overall (TCIM) Positivity Strengths.

So what to do now? Well, should a team decide to focus on Trust, introducing the ABCD’s may be a great start. By giving teams language, definitions, and opportunities to explore where they are today and where they would like to be tomorrow, clarity of expectations will surface. Further developing a bit of Trust Muscle in the process.

I have created a simple questionnaire that can support individuals and ultimately help teams in this type of activity. If interested in the questionnaire, let me know. I can share it with you.
