    Exercise: Understanding your communication style

    There are four different communication styles that we will be diving into. Meet PEAT the 4 different communication styles… People-Oriented (Participator), Entrepreneur (Energizer), Analytic and Accurate (Analyst) and Task and Time-oriented (Taskmaster).

    Read the questions below to determine which of the following communication styles resonates most with you. There are 14 questions for each style so tally up your score out of 14 for each section to find your dominant style.

    Participator

     Emphasize harmony, collaboration, and consensus?
     See yourself as “other” oriented?
     Work at building harmony and trust?
     Make decisions based on equity and fairness?
     Focus on feelings as well as ideas?
     Try to get others involved?
     Dislike or avoid conflict?

     Try to sell your ideas using enthusiasm?
     Take the lead in most interactions?
     Avoid lots of detail and deep analysis?
     Make decisions based on “gut feel”?

     Sometimes talk more than listen?
     Show creativity and innovation?
     Like to explore fresh ideas and alternatives?
     Sometimes talk before thinking?
     Talk and write quickly using long sentences?
     Use phrases such as “Trust me” and “What if”?

    Analyst

     Emphasize quality and accuracy?
     Want to do things right the first time even if it takes longer?
     Make decisions based on analysis and objectivity?
     Prefer to act fairly and independently?
     Like to evaluate pros/cons and cost/benefits?
     Need to have things planned out in advance?
     Feel comfortable with rules and standards?
     Prefer to minimize/avoid risk?
     Lean toward what has worked in the past?
     Present details logically?
     Ask for, and give, in-depth answers?
     Describe your communication style as logical and fact-based?
     Like to be right?
     Think thoughts like, “If you want it done right, it’s better to do it yourself”?

    Taskmaster
    Do you…
     Enjoy doing many things at once?
     Emphasize actions and results?
     Like to have many things going on at once?
     Take control of situations?
     Make quick decisions based on summary data?
     Hide personal feelings (except maybe anger)?
     Prefer to act fairly independently?
     Find yourself too direct at times?
     Prefer to brief and to-the-point interactions?
     Dislike losing?
     Show impatience with slow progress?
     Talk and write using “bullets”?
     Use phrases such as, “What’s the bottom line”?
     Think thoughts like, “If you want something done your way, it’s easier to do it yourself”?

    Reflection:
     Which style do you use most of the time?
     What style is the dominant style of the team, and why might that be?
     What are the pros/cons of using this style?
     What might be possible if the team could flex in communication style?
