Trust / truth or myth?
To support trust in a group I found the following ice-breaker very useful.
Goal:
To get to know each other in a different way
Share something what the others might not know
´Create a positive atmosphere
Material:
Instructions on flipchart can be provided
Description of exercise “Truth or Myth”:
This exercise helps create a playful atmosphere at the start of a group session or as a warm-up after lunch break. The group should not be larger than 8. If larger, split into subgroups.
Instructions:
Now I invite you to share something about yourself which might not be known to others. It can be a hobby, something you like or dislike, something you have experienced. You will write down 3 statements – one of them being not true, two of them being correct. Please make it hard to guess, not to obvious or already known by everybody.
After everybody is done writing her/his statements, we will start the sharing. One person is reading out her/his statements. Your team members are going to guess the one which is not true.
Example:
I like classical music.
I have travelled to 3 continents.
I like watching science fiction films.
Debrief:
– During the exercise the group usually develops a positive atmosphere with laughter and sharing, so do not talk too much detail afterwards (and destroy the atmosphere created)
– What did you find most astonishing?
– Describe the atmosphere in the team during this exercise
– What can we take from this?
