    Tips and questions about Goals & Strategies on teams:
    – Write 3 goals that will propel the mission of your team.

    – What is your experience working with teams to set goals?

    – What are some powerful ways for creating effective rewards and recognition on teams?

    – If you could name 1 important team goal from these various perspectives, what would it be?
    (Goals may be different depending on the perspective.)

    – Discuss an example of when the team effectively accomplished a big challenge. What were the success factors? What did you learn about yourselves as a team?

    The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is a strategic planning and performance measurement system developed by Robert Kaplan and David Norton in the early 1990s. Traditionally, organizations measured performance and success through financial metrics. The BSC broadens the factors that lead to success by advocating the creation of KPIs in four critical areas linked to overall vision and strategy. Ideally, a Scorecard is defined at the organizational level then cascaded down through the functional, divisional, project, team levels.

    The four areas providing the balance are:

    • Financial
    • Customer Relationships
    • Internal Processes
    • Learning and Development

    There is a plethora of information out there on the BSC. A couple of informative resources include:

    In a team coaching engagement, one approach could be for the team to use the BSC framework while defining their KPIs. It will be important for the team to understand how they impact objectives at higher organizational levels in each of the 4 areas. Once the KPIs are defined, the team could then come to agreement on which TPIs are most important to bring into play in order to meet the goals. Perhaps limiting the number of key TPIs for each goal to 3-4 to maintain focus could be suggested. Once all the key TPIs for each KPI are identified, the team can take a step back to see what patterns might be emerging. Which TPIs appear most often? Which of our TPI strengths will play a major role in our success? Which TPIs do we need to develop? Action planning can then take place which leverages strengths and develops needed skills based on priorities also established during the KPI/TPI exercise.
