This exercise is a great kick-off for any team coaching program as it builds trust by revealing behaviors that can support and detract from team performance. Participants are asked to create their “T-shirt” by doing the following:

    (1) On the front of the T-shirt, list all of the characteristics of yourself of which you are most proud, and which typically show up when you are relaxed and engaged. Typical examples might include: “Organized,” “Detail-Oriented,” “Creative,” “Personable,” etc.

    (2) On the back of the T-shirt, list the characteristics of yourself that you typically display when you are under stress. Theses are the parts of you that you would prefer that others don’t see, but nonetheless show up from time to time. Typical examples might include: “Controlling,” “Withdrawn,” “Cold,” etc.

If the session is in person, they can work on real T-shirts (with fabric markers). They can also create “T-shirts” on flip charts. In virtual settings, participants can create their “T-shirts” on their computers and share while in the meeting.

Participants work on their T-shirts quietly for approximately 10 minutes, then go around the room and share both the fronts and backs.
